How to label internal transfers before an estimate session
When you move coins between two wallets you control, many exchange exports still look like a sale followed by a purchase. In a Desktop Tax Estimate Session those lines inflate disposals unless someone marks them first.
A simple labeling habit
Keep a small text file next to your CSVs. For each transfer, note the date, approximate amount, sending venue, and receiving venue. You do not need perfect hash strings on day one — dates and sizes often suffice to match rows.
What we look for in-session
- Matching outbound and inbound amounts within a short time window
- Fee-only differences that still point to the same movement
- Screenshots or memos that show both addresses belong to you
What still goes wrong
People sometimes label every withdrawal as internal. Withdrawals to a friend or to an exchange you later sold from are not internal. Over-labeling can hide real disposals. When unsure, leave a question mark in your notes; we would rather discuss the line than inherit a wrong tag.
Bring that note file to your estimate session and the worksheet stays cleaner from the first hour.
